The Story

Convicted for statutory rape, Randle McMurphy has no intention of spending his sentence in jail; so he pretends to be mentally disturbed and is sent to a psychiatric asylum to be assessed. As an anti-authoritarian outsider, he rebels against the asylum’s routine and the power-hungry Head Nurse Ratched, and, as a result, draws the admiration of the other patients to himself. Medication, group therapy and electroshock treatement are all part of the game McMurphy is playing. However, he loses track of the fact that the last point at which he could back out has passed.
In this their 35th jubilee year, the University Players are staging One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest for the second time. Freed from the straight-jacket context of the sixties, this production does away with the walls of the asylum. The only bars are those created by the inmates and personnel’s control system, which has become independent over the years, losing all sight of its original goal. It is a well-known, dangerous pattern, that we are repeatedly confronted with.
